Silencing the Guns Renews Its Push for a Peaceful Africa
The African Union has reaffirmed its commitment to Silencing the Guns, the flagship initiative to end wars, civil conflicts, gender based violence and to prevent genocide on the continent. Originally targeted for 2020, the initiative was extended to 2030 to sustain the long term work of building peace.
Peace and security underpin every other ambition in Agenda 2063. Without stability, it is far harder to grow economies, attract investment, deliver schools and clinics, or protect the rights of citizens. That is why the fourth Moonshot commits the continent to resolving its conflicts amicably by 2033.
The approach emphasises prevention and dialogue, supported by a fully operational African Peace and Security Architecture, mediation efforts, and tools such as an African Human Security Index to monitor progress. Regional Economic Communities play a central role, often acting first when tensions rise.
Officials acknowledged that progress is uneven and that several conflicts remain unresolved, but stressed that a peaceful Africa is both achievable and essential to the Africa we want.
