Linking Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals

How the African agenda and the global goals reinforce one another.

Agenda 2063 and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are mutually reinforcing. The African Union maps each Agenda 2063 goal and its priority areas to the relevant Sustainable Development Goals, so that countries can plan, budget and report against both frameworks together.

Goal 1, a high standard of living, quality of life and well being for all citizens, maps to SDG 1 end poverty, SDG 2 end hunger, SDG 8 decent work and economic growth, and SDG 11 sustainable cities and communities.

Goal 2, well educated citizens and a skills revolution, maps to SDG 4 quality education.

Goal 3, healthy and well nourished citizens, maps to SDG 3 good health and well being.

Goal 4, transformed economies, maps to SDG 8 decent work and economic growth and SDG 9 industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Goal 5, modern agriculture, maps to SDG 2 zero hunger.

Goal 6, the blue and ocean economy, maps to SDG 14 life below water.

Goal 7, environmentally sustainable and climate resilient economies, maps to SDG 6 clean water and sanitation, SDG 7 affordable and clean energy, SDG 13 climate action and SDG 15 life on land.

Goal 10, world class infrastructure, maps to SDG 9 industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Goals 11 and 12, governance and capable institutions, map to SDG 16 peace, justice and strong institutions.

Goals 13, 14 and 15, peace and security, map to SDG 16 peace, justice and strong institutions.

Goal 17, full gender equality, maps to SDG 5 gender equality.

Goal 18, engaged and empowered youth and children, maps to SDG 4 quality education and SDG 5 gender equality.

Goal 19, Africa as a major partner in global affairs, maps to SDG 17 partnerships for the goals.

Goal 20, financing Africa's development, maps to SDG 10 reduced inequalities and SDG 17 partnerships for the goals.

The practical message is integrated planning. When a single national plan and a single set of indicators serve both agendas, governments reduce the reporting burden, improve data quality and make progress easier for citizens to see.
